Final Project

Time is as fragile as the world it has created.

For my final project I would like to work in performance.  I would like to collaborate with a large unknown number of people in order to create a tangible piece of art (be it book, collage, spontaneous performance etc).  As I begin I will use time as my catalyst, yet I plan on conducting further research, writing, and having conversations to influence the work I plan on creating.  I want to create a tangible and evident piece of art for this last project, as I have  not yet been able to do that in this course thus far.  I will document my process accordingly if need be, but I would really like to keep this project as hands on a possible, as I tend to let my ideas wander if my hands are not involved.  By Thanksgiving Break I want to have my idea actualized, and then begin collaborating with friends, family and strangers alike.  By December 1st, I would like to be pretty much finished with the construction of my piece and work on tweaking the details before December 8th when it is to be formally displayed in class

Ana Mendieta

Ana Mendieta
Body Tracks (Blood Sign #2) 1974, one minute, color, sound

Ana Mendieta, a politically charged Cuban-born artist, paints with blood on a gallery wall.  I was initially drawn to Blood Sign # 2 because of the form that her painted figure takes.  It is part funnel and part uterus- the two lines (created by her hands) come together as her body surrenders towards the ground.  By using blood as her medium, she generated discussion about the women’s place in politics during the seventies.  As a performance piece, Blood Sign #2 attempts to reconcile women and her body as well as women and the representations of themselves as political powers.

Attached is my sound piece.  The speaker is telling me the story of someone that she is loosely acquainted with.
